Postnatal obesity as variant of hypothalamo-metabolic syndrome

Hypothalamic disturbances were observed in 65 women 18 to 58 years old with postnatal obesity. In most the metabolic disturbances were associated with complications during pregnancy, toxaemia, haemorrhaging, infections or, in more than half, with subsequent abortions, obesity increasing with increasing number of abortions. In many there were disturbances of the nervous system, in carbohydrate and fat metabolism and in the menstrual cycle. Pathogenesis of postnatal obesity and treatment, the same as in hypothalamic obesity, are discussed.
