Intermittent occurrences of depressed milk production, inappetence, diarrhoea and ketosis, associated in each instance with a recent delivery of concentrate ration, were shown to be due to lincomycin contamination of the feed at the mill, which also produced pig feed medicated with this antibiotic. The syndrome was reproduced in a calved heifer by feeding cake containing lincomycin at 7.5 ppm. Similar incidents in UK herds have been due to feed contamination with zinc bacitracin and penicillin. The author considers that cross contamination with feed additives occurs widely in mills which have a common production line for cattle, pig and poultry feeds.
