Pretreatment with L-histidine precursor of histamine delayed the onset, shortened the duration and decreased the intensity of stereotyped behavior induced by methamphetamine; chlorcyclizine, a H1 receptor blocker, potentiated methamphetamine-induced stereotyped behavior and blocked the inhibitory effect of L-histidine on methamphetamine stereotypy. The central histaminergic system, by exerting a modulatory influence on the striatal dopaminergic system, may influence the functioning of the extrapyramidal motor system.
