A study was conducted in Wisconsin and Kansas on the use of intrauterine infusion of 200 mg gentamicin. In Kansas, the efficacies of gentamicin and Utonex (ethinyloestradiol and nitrofurathiazide) for treating endometritis were also compared. In Wisconsin, 95% of 40 untreated normal cows conceived after one to three services. 91% of 44 normal cows and 91% of 46 infected cows conceived after one intrauterine infusion of 200 mg gentamicin. The interval between treatment and conception was similar for treated normal and treated infected cows; 99% of 213 bacteria isolated before treatment were susceptible to gentamicin. In the Kansas study, 200 mg gentamicin eliminated clinical signs of genital system infections in 88% of treated cows. Utonex (20 ml) was effective in 79% of similarly infected animals. The conception rate was 81% in the gentamicin-treated infected cows versus 86% in the Utonex-treated infected cows. Mean conception time after treatment was shorter for the group treated with gentamicin than for the group treated with Utonex. 96% of the normal cows treated with gentamicin conceived to 89% of the normal cows treated with Utonex. No adverse reactions occurred in cows infused with either preparation.
