The occurrence of isolated or combined lesions of the hepatic veins or of the retrohepatic vena cava can be expected in 2-3% of all contused abdominal traumas in humans. The central problem of this type lesion is the control of massive bleeding in an area where access is difficult. Collective statistics show 80% mortality. A possible mechanism for the lesion and a survey of surgical techniques are described.
