The psychiatric studies carried out for several years resulted in the description of a particular organic injury to the CNS which develops in Alpinists because of the long-lasting effect of traumatic factors of high altitude environment and is complicated by psychosomatic disturbances. It is called the syndrome of high altitude asthenia (asthenia altitudinis) and occurs in the characteristic, encephalopatic and neuroplegic forms. The period of the stay on high altitude, pshcoorganic or psychiatric complications in the course of acute mountain sickness as well as the altitude deterioration with Cheyne-Stokes breathing play an essential role in the development of this syndrome. High altitude asthenia runs chronically and sometimes progressively.
