Estimation of gastric emptying by the dilution of a non-absorbable substance (polyethylene glycol, PEG) perfused in the duodenum (D2) was studied in 9 subjects following 2 different protocols. Each patient ingested a test-meal twice: meat concentrate Liebig with 6 .mu.C of PEG C14. A continuous infusion of cold PEG into the duodenum was initiated either 1 h after ingestion of the meal (protocol A), or from the beginning of the ingestion of the meal (protocol B). In protocol A, intraluminal flow rate at the sampling site (Treitz angle) and the corresponding gastric emptying were underestimated: only 86.9% of the PEG C14 load was recovered, vs. 100% in protocol B. To study gastric emptying satisfactorily by the dilution technique, using a non-absorbable substance perfused in the duodenum, the infusion of the marker into the duodenum should be started at the time of the meal ingestion.
