In contrast to decreased P excretion after release of unilateral ureteral obstruction, urinary P excretion was increased after release of bilateral ureteral obstruction (BUO). The phosphaturia was independent of PTH AMP concentration in response to PTH in renal cortical slices was not altered in BUO and the phosphaturic response to dibutyryl cAMP was also obliterated in the postobstructed rat, suggesting that the mechanism of PTH resistance may be at steps after cAMP generation. Bilateral ureteral obstruction activated the basal protein kinase activity in the cortex to a level greater than that of the enzyme activity stimulated by exogenous cAMP in the nonobstructed rat. The increased protein kinase activity might be involved in the metabolic changes in BUO.
