Diagnosis at atrophic rhinitis by endoscopy of the nasal cavity

The method was tried in 70 anaesthetized pigs. The apparatus consisted of an endoscope (lens 3.5 mm diameter and 115 mm length) used in conjunction with a tube speculum (of the same length and of 4.5-5.5 mm outer diameter) and a light projector. Photographs were possible only with animals of over 25 kg, as a speculum of 6.5 mm outer diameter is necessary. Diagnosis of atrophy or deformation of the ventral turbinate or nasal septum is possible and the method is thus a valuable alternative to X-ray examination or to PM section. Considerable additional equipment is necessary if photography is to be attempted; this is therefore likely to be restricted to use for demonstration purposes.
