Visceral leishmaniasis was diagnosed in 22 children (aged 18 months to 12 years) seen at a paediatric hospital in Iran from 1967 to 1975. The most constant clinical findings were fever, marked splenomegaly and a moderate hepatomegaly. Most of the cases (15) were male, probably because sexual differences in clothing allowed sandflies (Phlebotomus major and P. chinensis) to bite boys more easily than girls.
