Post-Kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis ( a review of 10 cases)

Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis was evaluated in 10 patients referred to the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research in Dacca, Bangladesh, from 1973 to 1976. 8 of the patients were aged between 20 and 40 years, and 7 were male. Dermal lesions appeared 5 to 15 years after visceral leishmaniasis. In 9 cases the lesions occurred over the face and 5 cases had lesions over the trunk. The dermal lesions included papules with or without erythema, nodules, hypopigmentation and hypertrophy (in one case). Skin scrapings revealed parasites in 7 cases, especially in the papular and nodular lesions. The viscera were parasite-free. Complete resolution of the lesions was achieved by treatment with sodium stibogluconate.
