There is now world-wide recognition of a rare syndrome presenting with one or more distinctive raised sharply outlined tender erythematous plaques which in effect are acute dermal granulomas consisting predominantly of neutrophils. Unfortunately there is not yet an understanding of why it occurs. This makes it important that these skin lesions continue to be regarded as 1 manifestation of a more widespread systemic illness which can also affect joints and mucous membranes and are accompanied by fever and a brisk polymorphonuclear leukocytosis. It seems definite that disseminated and solitary lesions are expressions of the same pathological process.
