Loiasis: report of three cases and literature review

Three cases of loaiasis in Nigerian students studying in the USA are reported. Two presented with a worm in their eyes and all 3 were positive for Loa loa microfilariae in peripheral blood. Two had been in the USA for 5 years and the other for only one. All were treated with diethylcarbamazine citrate at 6 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 14 or 21 days. Post-treatment blood films were negative for L. loa but Acanthocheilonema perstans persisted in 2 of the patients.
