In 6 experiments, 5 show that central catecholamines (CA) exert an antagonistic effect upon acupuncture analgesia (AA) and central 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) facilitates AA. AA efficacy may be partly determined by the relative strength of these contradictory neurotransmitters in the CNS, although this 5-HT/CA interrelationship may not be the only decisive factor controlling AA.
