Serum trypsin inhibitory capacity in protein-calorie malnourished children in Benin city, Nigeria

Trypsin-inhibitory capacity was estimated in serum of 22 Nigerian children with protein-energy malnutrition. Values were within or above those for appropriate control serum. However, the mean value for total protein in kwashiorkor was significantly lower than that for marasmic patients. This suggests that the plasma protease inhibitor system is preserved even when the synthesis of plasma protein has been seriously impaired.
