Measles in peninsular Malaysia

According to statistics for Malaysia, measles caused only 0.5% of deaths among young children in 1972 but from hospital case records it was an underlying cause of some deaths certified as due to other causes such as pneumonia. From a study of children from families of high income, measles had a deleterious effect on nutritional status in 42% of those children. The cost of vaccination was little more than the cost of hospital care for children with measles and the addition of measles vaccination to existing routine immunization for children would reduce the incidence not only of measles but also of malnutrition.
