40 women, 18-30 years of age, who were coronary risk patients, received Exluton as a contraceptive. 28 of the women were high risk patients (12 cases-- hemodynamic risk, 8--thromboembolic risk, 14--risk of infection, 2--metabolic risk). 12 women were low risk patients; 9 had undergone heart surgery. A Pearl Index of 0 was recorded; after 3 years a continuation rate of 65% was reported. 36% of the patients experienced some form of amenorrhea and 23% reported spotting. Laboratory tests of metabolic, hepatic, and coagulation factors showed stable values. Low-dose gestagen preparations are indicated for high-risk cardiac patients, while low-dosage combination preparations may be indicated for low-risk cardiac patients in some cases.
