Bacterial skin infections in the dog

A brief account of superficial pyoderma (pyotraumatic dermatitis, intertrigo, impetigo, folliculitis) and deep pyoderma (furunculosis, acne, nasal pyoderma, suppurative hydradenitis, interdigital and juvenile pyoderma). Bacteriological examination of 53 cases yielded 28 strains of coagulase-positive staphylococci, 9 strains of haemolytic streptococci and smaller numbers of 8 other types of bacteria, including three cases of mixed infection with Escherichia coli and streptococci or clostridia. Tests of the susceptibility of the staphylococci to antibiotics showed that trimethoprim and sulfonamides were unlikely to be of therapeutic value. However, the staphylococci were sensitive to most of the major antibiotics.
