The past and present role of the hospital dietitian is reviewed and the following suggestions are made for improving the nutritional care of patients in the future: 1) improve nutrition education at all levels; 2) increase humanitarianism in medical practice; 3) increase understanding of diet-disease interactions; 4) improve methods of nutritional diagnosis and surveillance; 5) provide a variety of trained professionals and administrative back-up; 6) improve food items, mechanical units, and nutritional facilities; and 7) improve understanding and cooperation between dietitians and other health care personnel.
