The incidence of head-louse infestation in the county of Cottbus, German Democratic Republic, increased in 1977, especially among school children. Control measures taken on an individual basis were relatively ineffective, but 2 rather different operations carried out on a major scale in the urban and rural districts of Cottbus led to a highly significant reduction in the rate of infestation. A comparison of these operations showed that success through strict organisation and documentation, intensive use of a large public health task force and active cooperation of school staff and parents is possible but not easy to achieve.
