Erucic acid (EA) was estimated in 1102 samples of margarine and 837 samples of commercial edible oils from different regions of Poland in the years 1974-77. Six types of margarine contained EA in the fat base on average from 9.0 to 34.7%, values being above the Polish tolerance in 36.8% of samples. The average concentration of EA in oils varied among oil types from 0 for olive oil to 46.1% for rapeseed oil. EA was also detected in commercial soya bean, sunflower and groundnut oils, average concentrations ranging from 3.9 to 9.0%.
