Gastric candidiasis in laboratory-reared brown lemmings

Post-mortem examination of 7 captive lemmings which died without signs of illness or after generalized weakness revealed white crumbly material on the gastric mucosa and lesions in the kidneys, liver and lungs. Candida albicans was cultured from the lesions and seen in tissue sections. The fruit diet fed to the animals was thought to be a predisposing factor to the candidiasis as the resultant abundance of simple sugars in the stomach would enhance fungal growth.
