Amenorrhea after prolonged use of OC (oral contraception) is fairly common. It must, however, not be confused with sterility. Postpill amenorrhea lasts an average 3-4 months, sometimes longer. On the other hand primary infertility in a couple can be present before contraception, unknown to the couple and to their doctor; indeed, several authors recommend testing the potential fertility of both partners before starting unneeded contraception. In other cases infertility can occur during the course of contraception because of a disease; in this case return to fertility after termination of OC may be more difficult. In any event, the cure for secondary sterility after contraception does not present any relevant problems, while the cure for primary sterility is not always successful.
