An ELISA for the detection of maedi/visna antibody

An enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) used to detect antibodies to maedi/visna virus in serum of sheep and goats is described. Among 500 serum samples from commercial flocks in the Netherlands, tested in the ELISA and in routine agar gel precipitation and complement fixation tests (AGPT, CFT), all that were positive with AGPT or CFT were also positive with ELISA, which test also revealed a further 11.7% positive samples. Antibodies could be detected three weeks after infection in experimentally infected sheep. ELISA was found to be a specific test requiring relatively little antigen and which could be read objectively.
