The classification of 73 strains of the bacteria of the genus Rhodococcus isolated from natural substrates was made by numerical taxonomy methods; 121 characters are studied for each strain and the data are analyzed by computers. The phenotypical similarity of strains was estimated by calculating the taxonomic distance and association coefficent (the coefficient of simple coincidence). The grouping of strains was conducted by means of the next-door neighbor algorithm. Most of the strains at the 93 similarity level are united into 5 isolated groups. Two are identified with the species of the genus Rhodococcus: R. maris [Flavobacterium maris] (Harrison, 1929) comb. nov. (type strain IMV 195) and R. luteus [Mycobacterium luteum] (Soehngen, 1913) comb. nov. (type strain IMV 385). One of the groups is defined as Rhodococcus sp. Characters are presented for differentiating and identifying the detected groups.
