Misleading hyponatraemia in acute pancreatitis with hyperlipaemia

A man 33 years old was admitted to hospital with acute pancreatitis and massive hypertriglyceridaemia and hypercholesterolaemia after alcohol abuse. The hyperlipaemia interfered with estimation of serum amylase because of turbidity of the specimen and also gave serum sodium values misleadingly low by as much as 10 mmol/litre because of the space-occupying effect of the lipid.
