A patient connected to an anesthetic machine or a ventilator is cut off from the atmosphere in a closed system in which excessive pressures can be easily generated. Unless an efficient safety valve is fitted, the patient is in a hazardous situation. A modified Heidbrink valve was quite acceptable in routine anesthetic use.
