An 18 mo. bacteriological study was made on the presence of Neisseria meningitidis in the sputum of 4462 healthy people of different ages residing in the principal cities of Chile. An overall carrier rate of 17% was found, with prevalence of the meningococci highest in young adults. Meningococci strains described as pathogenic and of high epidemiologic risk amounted to 34% of the total number of strains encountered, the most frequent of these being serotypes C and Y. A detailed description was made of carrier distribution by age group, geographic sector, strain group and place of work or study.
