Following amputation of forelimbs through the carpal region 10 out of 14 adults of R. cyanophlyctis regenerated spike-like outgrowths. Dipping the stumps in 150,000 IU vitamin A palmitate solution for 2 min daily, once immediately after amputation and once on each of the subsequent 5 days, led to an improved regeneration: blastema was formed 2 days earlier and regeneration occurred in all 16 cases. Regenerates were larger and spatulate or with digit-like outgrowths; in 1 case a definite hand-like structure with 3 digits was formed.
