Surgical gastrostomy was performed on newborn rats. Using constant infusion techniques the animals were artificially fed for 20 days. Biochemical investigations of the brain gave normal values as compared to control rats. This technique can be used for controlled studies of the influence of nutrition and other factors upon the developing brain of the newborn rat. The newborn rat is comparable with the prematurely born human and is suitable for studies of brain maturation.
