Role of synthetic mammalian thyrotropin releasing hormone on fish thyroid peroxidase activity

Mammalian TRH (thyrotropin releasing hormone) stimulated the thyroid peroxidase activity of the teleost O. punctatus. There was a dose specificity of TRH for augmentation of fish thyroid peroxidase activity; 200, 400 and 600 ng/100 g body weight augmented the thyroid peroxidase activity almost in increasing order. A sharp fall of fish thyroid peroxidase activity occurred with 800 ng/100 g body weight which again declined gradually with 1200 ng/100 g body weight. Stimulatory action of TRH on the thyroid peroxidase enzyme activity was completely suppressed by 50 .mu.g/100 g body weight of thyroxine (T4). The profile of administration of T4 alone or T4 plus TRH on thyroid peroxidase enzyme activity was smilar, suggesting that both of them were mediating their effects on thyroid peroxidase enzyme via the same target site like pituitary.
