Of 5 infants 4 to 13 months old 4 had diarrhoea refractory to treatment, 3 after dysentery caused by Shigella flexneri, 1 after measles and 1 was premature and had bronchopneumonia and protein-energy malnutrition. They were fed parenterally for 10 to 39 days on 15% hypertonic glucose solution to supply 10 to 18 g/kg bodyweight daily and protein hydrolysates to supply nitrogen 0.25 to 0.5 g/kg daily. Every 2 days lipid emulsions were given to supply 2 g/kg. After 1 to 3 days some food, free from disaccharides, could be given by mouth. The children gained 16 to 22 g daily, which was not possible when food was given by mouth alone.
