The participation of the levator scapulae and rhomboideus major muscles in some free movements of the shoulder was analyzed in 21 young adult male volunteers. A 2 channel TECA TE4 electromyograph connected with single coaxial needle electrodes was used. In movement at the level of the scapulae girdle, the levator scapulae muscle was active to elevate the shoulders and the rhomboideus major to retract the scapulae and brace back the shoulder. During protraction to the shoulders the participation of these muscles was absent in the majority of the observations.
