Solutions of crude casein contained a chemotactic peptide, mol. wt. 2200. As in the case of other cytotaxins, this compound displayed hydrophobic properties. Partially purified casein cytotaxin stimulated the disproportionate oxidation of [1-14C]glucose, indicating an increased activity of the hexose monophosphate shunt in cells exposed to cytotaxin. No evidence was found for activation of latent cellular esterases by cytotaxin.
