Studies on rats subjected to electrocoagulation of the parathyroid glands showed that there was a significant increase in GABA in the cerebral cortex, along with an insignificant increase in glutamic acid and a significant decrease in aspartic acid. In the hypothalamus, there was a significant drop in the GABA and aspartic acid levels, together with a substantial increase in the glutamic acid level. All 3 amino acids were reduced in the spinal cord. These findings were evidence of metabolic disturbances and consequent disturbances in inhibition and excitation processes at various levels of the CNS.
