Direct photometry is used to measure the spectral reflectance of human skin in vivo in 238 subjects all with fair skin and some with a known skin disease. Skin reflectance is less by about 25% for areas of the skin usually exposed to sunlight than that of the areas commonly remained covered with the clothing. Skin reflectance is altered by as much as 25% by some skin diseases. This fact may be used as a tool for the early detection of such diseases.
