Oxamniquine in the treatment of various schistosome infections in South Africa

In trials in the lowveld of the Eastern Transvaal, South Africa, 2 doses of 15 mg/kg body-weight daily for 2 consecutive days was the most effective regime of oxamniquine treatment against schistosomiasis in schoolchildren. 33 children of this regime showed a 97 to 99% reduction in output of Schistosoma mansoni eggs up to 10 months after treatment. No effect was noted against S. haematobium or S. mattheei. Side effects were mild and transient and there were no significant haematological or biochemical changes.
