Male rats weighing 180 to 200 g had free access to food or were deprived of food for 66 h while at ground level or exposed to a simulated altitude of 6100 m for 5 h beginning 3 to 4 h before the end of the period of deprivation. More air was present in the lungs at the end of deflation in both deprived groups than in controls. Lung compliance was decreased in both deprived groups. Opening pressure during air filling, volume of air in the lungs at peak pressure, water content of lungs and lung dry weight:wet weight ratio were not affected.
