Anatomopathological analysis of cause of death of 466 live newborns throughout the years 1962-1977 and of 46 stillborn non-macerated fetuses was conducted. The most frequent cause of death is infection, primarily bronchopneumonia. The 2nd most important cause is the hyaline membrane syndrome. No decrease in the percentage of pneumonia deaths was observed. An increase of the hyaline membrane syndrome percentage was found which was linked to increasing prematurity. An increase in congenital malformations as a cause of death in mature newborns was observed. A decrease of the percentage of delivery trauma was observed, indicating advances in obstetrics.
