Pathophysiology and new treatments of congestive heart failure (CHF) syndrome are reviewed. The role of digitalis glycosides as the most specific and most efficient myocardial contraction agents is emphasized. Avoidance of digitoxicity is stressed. Na restricted diets and diuretic therapy are presented as secondary measures. Decreased physical activity and emotional stress are nonpharmacological factors important in the management of CHF.
