Experiments on human volunteers in whom the effect of i.v. infusions of dopamine on HCl and gastrin secretion by the stomach were conducted, showed that dopamine has no effect on the secretions at the dosage used (5 .mu.g/kg per min). Volunteers were intubated with a Levine stomach tube and HCl was tested by Topfer and Linossier titration, while gastrin was tested for in the blood by radioimmunoassay. HCl and gastrin secretion were of an adrenergic character and were stimulated to varying extents by adrenaline . Apparently dopamine and dopaminergic receptors in the stomach are not involved in gastric secretory function. The effectiveness of adrenergic agents on gastric secretion shows that the action is exerted by .beta.-adrenergic receptors.
