The molluscicidal effect of 18 salicylanilides was tested on Bithynia tentaculata, Viviparus viviparus, Sphaerium corneum in the laboratory and on B. inflata in the laboratory and in the field in USSR. The most active was the compound MB-12, 2',3,5-trichloro-4'-nitrosalicylanilide (LD50 0.02; LD90 0.05). The anthelmintics clioxanide (MB-1) and rafoxanide (MB-14) were less active. The preparations containing an oxy(acetoxy)phenyl group in the anilide part were the least effective molluscicides but the most active cercaricides (of interest for the "treatment" of infected molluscs). MB-4, 4'-oxy-5-chlorosalicylanilide was lethal to Opisthorchis felineus cercariae in 3.5 minutes at 1 mg/litre and in 5 hours at 0.001 mg/l.
