The seasonal characteristics of immunological reactions to antigens in the heart and vessels in patients with atherosclerosis were studied in 45 persons, predominantly men ages 50-60 yr. Seropositive reactions in the interaction of blood serum of atherosclerosis patients with tissue antigens [Ag] were determined by antibodies [Ab] and were different at various times of the year. During the winter, reactions with serum .beta.-lipoproteins and proteins of the aorta were most frequent, while during the spring and summer the number of seropositive reactions with tissue Ag did not exceed statistically reliable levels. According to statistics, the largest incidence of vascular catastrophes was registered in the winter and autumn months, which corresponds to the highest concentrations of Ab to serum .beta.-lipoproteins and vascular Ag. The formation of Ab to tissue Ag may facilitate the formation of immune complexes, the deposition of which in the vascular walls increases their permeability and the release of vasoactive amines and facilitates thrombogenesis.
