Sixteen patients with chronic renal failure on maintenance haemodialysis were studied before and during treatment with essential amino acids by mouth. The patients received their usual diets supplying 60 to 100 g protein daily throughout. Plasma amino acids were studied predialysis before supplements were started, after one and after 3 months of treatment; some measurements were also made after dialysis. Before treatment, 63% of patients before and 82% after dialysis had at least one essential amino acid value lower than the normal range. After one month of treatment, 38% of patients before and 67% after dialysis had one or more low essential amino acid value. After 3 months only 2 patients had an abnormal essential amino acid chromatogram predialysis. Changes in nonessential amino acids, blood urea, serum proteins and haemoglobin are also reported.
