Fading of malaria immunity in mice

Groups of 10 to 16 Swiss or C3H/St 2 mice were examined for immunity to Plasmodium berghei strain K 173. They were challenged by the inoculation of 10 parasites 54 to 626 days after the original infection. The immunity progressively diminished as showed by the increasing severity of the reinfections, and also by a shift of parasitic infections from polychromatophilic erythrocytes to oxyphilic ones, especially in Swiss mice. The longer parasites persisted in the original infections, the longer the immunity lasted.
