Graphs are provided depicting changes with age from 1-180 days of av. serum levels of albumin and total protein, and av. and individual serum levels of IgG1, IgG2, IgA and IgM in 20 Danish Red calves, all of which were bucket fed maternal colostrum twice/day for 2 days after birth. Pre-colostral serum immunoglobulin levels are tabulated for 13 of the calves, the presence of serum immunoglobulins in some of these calves is thought to result from antigenic stimulation of the calves' immune systems before birth. Correlation between immunoglobulin concn. and total protein or albumin concn. are tabulated, the large positive correlations between total protein and each of the immunoglobulin classes 1 day after the start of colostrum ingestion indicate that total protein determination is a useful measure of passively acquired immunity in newborn calves.
