Immuno-allergy survey using spherulin in a São Paulo general hospital

Spherulin from Coccidioides immitis was used to skin test patients (from various parts of the country) over the age of 11 yr at the Hosp. das Clinicas, Sao Paulo. A group of 194 individuals was tested with normal strength spherulin and negative reactors were subsequently tested with X 10 conc. spherulin. A 2nd group of 199 individuals, including 9 with P brasiliensis infection, were tested only with usual strength spherulin. Only 1 person in the 2nd group gave a positive reaction (0.25%) and the authors conclude that coccidioidomycosis does not occur in eastern Brazil.
