Response is made to a statement by the International Council of Infant Food Industries (ICIFI) and a "Lancet" article. The ICIFI code of ethics is criticized. The role of processed infant foods and infant formula in developing countries is discussed. Difficulties and ethical considerations concerning the relationship between the health profession and the infant food industry are examined. Some mechanism is needed to ensure wide circulation of the vast amount of new information on infant nutrition to the health profession in developing countries.
