The antianginal activity of carnitine was studied in 8 patients with stable effort-induced pectoris with normal ECG at rest and typical appearance of the angina and ischemic depression of RS-T during upright bicycle exercise. Carnitine (i.v. 40 mg/kg body wt,) significantly increased the work threshold of the appearance of angina and ischemic depression of RS-T in relation to the control and placebo (saline solution). Heart rate and PEP/LVET ratio were significantly reduced by carnitine. The antianginal effect of carnitine was not due to a reduction of myocardial O2 consumption.
