Thrombocytopenia associated with antiheparin antibody

Thrombocytopenia developed in a 69 yr old woman receiving heparin sodium therapy for deep-vein thrombosis. Bone marrow and platelet survival studies suggested peripheral destruction of platelets. The serum factor associated with thrombocytopenia was an Ig M. Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia may be a common side effect of heparin therapy and should be evaluated to avoid serious consequences.
